About the Opportunity:
Reporting to the AVP for Research Compliance, the Director of Research Integrity is primarily responsible for the creation, oversight, monitoring, and management of the University's various research compliance and integrity programs, including the creation of a comprehensive export controls compliance program spanning the University's global network that balances the benefits of international collaborations while mitigating the risks associated with foreign influence. The Director shall also be responsible for the stewardship of the University's research misconduct policy and any subsequent assessments, inquiries and investigations pursuant to the policy.
Responsibilities:
Additionally, the Director shall be responsible for provision and oversight of a comprehensive education, training and outreach program for the research community including a research administration certification program for central and college administration staff supporting faculty and investigators with their sponsored proposals and awards, education & training opportunities for students and investigators in the responsible conduct of research (RCR), research compliance training, and trainings that may be part of corrective action related to any findings of non-compliance. In carrying out these responsibilities the Director will collaborate with Research Administration and Research Finance within NU -Research Enterprise Services, Office of the General Counsel, Compliance, Risk Management and Audit, Graduate Education, and College leadership, as appropriate.
The Director shall also work with the AVP for Research Compliance in providing substantive support across all aspects of the research and sponsored programs enterprise and in the review and assessment of possible instances of non-compliance. The Director is expected to routinely recommend opportunities to improve and promote compliance efforts at the University. S/he will be responsible for development of a communication plan focused on research integrity and excellence. Such plans will include outreach efforts including digital media, e.g., website. The Director, working in conjunction with members of the various research administration & finance units, will develop content and releases. The Director serves as the key point of contact for the technical staff maintaining website and has overall responsibility for ensuring on-going updates to maintain the information's currency and relevance to areas of emerging risk. The website should be user-friendly, accessible and regularly utilized as a central resource for research compliance related information and tools. The Director is expected to help maintain effective lines of communication with research faculty and college administrators.
Qualifications:
Excellent interpersonal, communication, critical-thinking, public speaking, writing and problem-solving skills; demonstrated commitment to providing responsive, positive and effective support for researchers and college administrators. 8-10 years of progressively responsible experience administering and supporting sponsored programs (research and sponsored activities). Strong knowledge of financial and regulatory compliance issues and processes related to award administration and strong practical experience in the development of efficient tools and processes to foster the expeditious review and resolution of such matters.
Proficiency with regulatory research compliance areas (Export Controls, IRB/IACUC/IBC, fCOI, RCR, research misconduct, etc.), including institutional and agency prior approval requirements. Advanced degree and professional certifications in research administration strongly preferred.
Thorough knowledge of extramural funding agencies and applicable regulations (OMB Uniform Guidance, FAR, DFAR, NSF/NIH policies, etc.); prior experience with U.S. government contracts. Affinity for teaching in-person, and strong, clear communication skills (listening, oral and written). Capacity for collaborating across disciplines. Adaptive technology skills, including working with PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, Adobe, Canvas / Blackboard (or similar), and the development of training materials and courses. Capable of managing multiple, competing priorities under deadlines.
