The Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University seeks an artist conductor-pedagogue to serve as Director of Orchestral Studies, beginning August 2023. The selected candidate will hold the Martha Raley Peak Endowed Centennial Chair in Music. Rank and salary are commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities

Provide artistic and administrative leadership of orchestra program; conduct Meadows Symphony Orchestra; recruit and mentor graduate students; participate in activities of the Division of Music in a robust liberal arts university; maintain a national/international profile as a conductor; collaborate with Division of Music faculty and staff members. Additional duties as assigned, which may include advising, teaching conducting, and coaching chamber music. The Director of Orchestral Studies is encouraged to produce innovative programs of eclectic musics with varying ensemble sizes and presentations.

The Division of Music within the Meadows School of the Arts enjoys a longtime relationship with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Most instrumental faculty are principal players in the DSO. The Meadows School of the Arts takes full advantage of the opportunities in the culturally rich Dallas metroplex with annual performances at the Meyerson Center or Winspear Opera House. Southern Methodist University produces exceptional student concerts and hosts international guest artists and ensembles, including on-going residencies from the winning ensemble of the Banff International String Quartet Competition.
