Assistant Director for FlexJD Advising, School of Law

About the Opportunity

Northeastern University School of Law ("NUSL") is renowned for our experiential approach that equips our students with real-world, practical opportunities to prepare them for rewarding legal careers. At the heart of NUSL is our Co-Operative Legal Education Program ("Co-op"). Students work under the supervision of attorneys to complete co-ops in a variety of practice areas and settings, including large and small law firms, legal service organizations, corporations, non-governmental organizations, government agencies, and courts at all levels.

The FlexJD program extends the offerings of the full-time JD program to the busy, working professional, affording flexibility of both time and space. This part-time law degree program combines flexible online coursework with scheduled in-person instruction for those with strong academic backgrounds but professional obligations that would make a full-time program challenging. Each FlexJD candidate will complete one 15-week co-op, working about 20 hours/week, plus one experiential opportunity, which may include a co-op or combination of projects, totaling 300 hours over 15 weeks.

The Center for Co-op and Career Development ("the Co-op Office") seeks a collaborative, entrepreneurial, creative thinker, with an understanding of the needs of adult working professionals to support Northeastern Law FlexJD students in developing and advancing their legal professional and career goals.

The Assistant Director for FlexJD Advising ("Assistant Director") is an integral member of the Co-op Office team. As such, the Assistant Director is the dedicated co-op and career adviser to FlexJD candidates, responsible for providing comprehensive co-op advising, career advising, and professional development programming to those students, while also advising full-time JD students as necessary and working collaboratively with other members of the team to meet the overarching goals of the Co-op Office.

The Assistant Director will meet regularly with each FlexJD student and recent graduates to discuss their professional interests, review their application materials for co-op and other experiential opportunities, and coach and prepare them for job interviews and other interactions with employers. Meetings with students will be virtual or in-person. In consultation with Co-op Office leadership, the Assistant Director will develop informational programming and resources to support FlexJD students and recent graduates in achieving their professional and career goals.

The Assistant Director will conduct employer outreach to develop and maintain co-op and career opportunities for Northeastern Law students, with a dedicated, but not exclusive, focus on helping FlexJD candidates to secure co-ops and post-graduate jobs, as well as other projects and initiatives where and when needed.

The Assistant Director will meet regularly with the Director of the FlexJD Program and other relevant stakeholders within the School of Law community to discuss and offer input on how best serve the needs of FlexJD students and graduates.

As NUSL's FlexJD Program enrolls students from throughout the US and across varied time zones, the Assistant Director is expected to adjust work schedule to meet student availability as needed. Further, the Assistant Director will be expected to attend and participate in events to support student networking, employer outreach, and admissions efforts for prospective and admitted FlexJD students, as needed. Occasional travel is required for employer outreach and professional development.
