Residence Life at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Senior Associate Director! This role is a twelve-month, live-out professional exempt position. As a senior leader within Residence Life, the Senior Associate Director is charged with significant planning, and execution, of departmental initiatives that cultivate a culture of care for staff that works within the department, and for students that live on campus.

The Senior Associate Director will assume director duties in the absence of the director, will be responsible for most day-to-day operational decisions, will guide staff development initiatives, and will supervise departmental operations & meetings. This position will supervise a team of Assistant Directors.

The Senior Associate Director will be part of the leadership team that leads the day-to-day operations of the residence life program which includes 24 residence hall buildings, apartment communities, 10,000+ residents, 50+ professional staff, 500+ student staff, and a vibrant Residence Hall Association. The program also has intentional designs in the areas of student engagement, academic initiatives, innovation, and student leadership. The Residence Life program is a department in Student Affairs on the University of Colorado Boulder campus. The Senior Associate Director will lead all Residence Life efforts around recruiting and retaining staff and student leaders, supporting graduate students and families who reside on campus, and key operational processes such as move-in and front desk operations.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


Personnel Management
  • Supervise, evaluate, and provide ongoing training and development for, 2-3 Master's Level Assistant Directors, 1-2 Coordinators, and 1 Administrative Assistant.
  • Indirect supervision of Hall Directors and student leaders, Community Center Coordinators & student staff assigned to work front desks, and staff in Graduate and Family Housing.
  • Lead implementation of processes to recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate very hardworking, student development-focused residence life professional staff, student staff, and student leaders.
  • Ensure that all federal, state, university, and departmental hiring procedures are followed.
  • Provide oversight and tracking of all required trainings, including Bias Reduction Training, for all new Residence Life employees.
  • Serve as departmental liaison to Human Resources for Assistant Director recruitment and retention processes including exit interview process implementation, and support Assistant Director level staff in management of foundational recruitment processes.
  • Be responsible for all staff onboard and offboarding processes, ensuring completion of all arrival and departure tasks including apartment and office readiness, training, and administrative tasks.
  • Develop and manage bi-annual training for the Residence Life leadership team.
  • Create and implement a professional staff training philosophy that considers new staff, returning staff, and re-training needs while using in-person and virtual modalities.
  • Guide the creation of resources that support the recruitment and retention of a diverse staff, including the utilization of equity-minded searchers.
  • Facilitate all norming conversations, and set shared expectations of the Assistant Director team to ensure consistency in staff support across various areas of the department.
  • Periodically review staffing models to determine the best level of service to the campus community.

Residence Life Leadership and Operations
  • Manage residence hall and apartment move-in, break transitions, and move-out protocols.
  • Ensure direct and indirect reports are prepared to implement Residential Experience (ResX) strategies, RAP, and LLC experiences for first-year, upper-class, and graduate and family-focused housing.
  • Guide Residence Life initiatives to create a flawless operational, developmental, and administrative environment that exceeds resident needs and expectations.
  • Manage creation and tracking of departmental committees and task forces, chairing as appropriate. Plan and facilitate Residence Life department meetings, and Leadership Team meetings & retreats.
  • Server as a backup in the absence of the Director.
  • Lead the creation and maintenance of departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) manual.
  • Communicates and assists with facility concerns and utility outages.
  • Assist with goal setting, implementation of the strategic plan, and development of structures and systems that pertain to staffing.

Crisis Management
  • Ensure that staff maintain awareness of campus response protocols and resources.
  • Provide support and follow-up as it relates to student conduct and crisis in assigned neighborhoods.
  • Assist in the implementation of a business continuity plan for residence life and coordinate emergency protocols and response.
  • Advocate student concerns to the university and community populations.
  • Serve in an on-call rotation with other associate directors and assistant directors to provide administrative backup for emergencies and other evening and weekend consultations with Residence Life staff.
  • Uphold all departmental and university crisis response policies and procedures.

External Relations
  • Establish and maintain relationships with campus partners, primarily the Graduate School, Off Campus and Neighborhood Relations, the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution, the Office of Student Support and Case Management, and the University of Colorado-Boulder Police Department.
  • Serve and lead student affairs committees as assigned.
  • Work with parents regarding concerns for students in the halls and Graduate and Family Housing.
  • Assist in response to university initiatives as related to residence life operations.
  • Serve as a liaison to Housing Facilities Services and University Housing; guiding day-to-day operational collaboration between units.

Fiscal Responsibility
  • Provide oversight of departmental Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) process to ensure mutually beneficial partnerships between Residence Life and campus partners.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for key business contracts such as with mail services, laundry services, transportation, and storage.
  • Oversee the process for tracking and maintaining information related to professional staff recruitment processes.
  • Provide oversight and guidance to Graduate and Family Housing Revenue and day-to-day fiscal operations including programming and building projects.
  • Propose annual budget priorities and assist in budget planning for the department.

Assessment
  • Develop, maintain, and report out, tracking for professional staff recruitment and retention efforts in Residence Life as it relates to the departmental and Student Affairs priorities.
  • Support departmental and Student Affairs assessment efforts and projects.

Starting salary for this position is $88,000-$92,500 annually.

What We Require

  • Master's degree or equivalent experience in Student Affairs and Higher Education or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • 5+ years of experience that demonstrates progressively responsible organizational authority in a residence life/housing program.
  • 2+ years experience supervising mid-level professionals.
  • Supervision of professional and paraprofessional staff, including recruitment and training of professional staff.
  • Experience with the creation and implementation of a recruitment and training program.
  • Experience analyzing and resolving disputes, team building, group dynamics, crisis management, and problem-solving skills.
