Faculty Director for Academic Programs in Policy Practice
Georgetown University: Main Campus: McCourt School of Public Policy

Location: Main Campus
Open Date: Sep 11, 2024
Deadline: Jan 01, 2025 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

Description
Faculty Director for Academic Programs in Policy Practice - Professor of the Practice or Teaching Professor

A key foundational strength of the McCourt School of Public Policy is our D.C. location, our connections to the policymaking community, and the resulting opportunities for experiential learning related to policy practice. To leverage all the benefits of our new Capitol Campus location and to enhance the appeal of our new undergraduate program, the McCourt School is looking to hire a full-time non-tenure line faculty member to build opportunities for experiential learning.

Building on existing relationships, the Faculty Director will play a central role in growing and strengthening our connections with local policy and community organizations. These connections will be multidimensional, but one important element will be expanding opportunities for our students to learn by engaging in analysis, program design, implementation and evaluation, with local partners.

In particular, the Faculty Director will have responsibility for:

  • Working with potential partners to identify their needs and priorities, and opportunities to build long-term, sustainable, and mutually beneficial collaborations for our students.

  • Determining the characteristics of a high-quality, out-of-classroom learning experience, by which to identify and cultivate future partners;

  • Working with McCourt faculty, staff and students, to identify goals and constraints in supporting these collaborations, including how classroom time can best support and maximize learning through out-of-classroom experiences;

  • Developing a set of models to support policy practice opportunities that meet the relevant requirements for academic credit and build on best practices at other institutions, in collaboration with other Georgetown University partners.

  • Coordinating with existing McCourt experiential efforts, including the Capstone projects, the Policy Innovation Lab, and research assistantship program;

  • Teach 1-2 sections (approx. 20 students/section) of Internship Seminar and/or Policy Lab (see below)

  • Teach 1-2 sections (approx. 30 students/section) of graduate or undergraduate courses in substantive specialty

The new Faculty Director will have primary responsibility for experiential learning in the undergraduate program and will coordinate efforts with our graduate programs. We anticipate that the new Faculty Director will fulfill some of the teaching responsibilities by taking a leadership role with the Policy Innovation Lab. Undergraduate program development will be key given the importance of experiential integration to the program design and for student demand. Students in the undergraduate program will put their skill sets into practice through a policy-relevant, non-classroom-based field or research experience. The new Faculty Director will take the lead in developing the Internship Seminar and Policy Lab models, including how time in and out of the classroom are leveraged to support student learning goals. As undergraduate enrollments grow, they will help recruit and orient other faculty to teach these courses.

Summary of Internship Seminar and Policy Lab

The projected salary for this position is $94,778 - $107,654 for Teaching Professor and $129,193 - $142,635 for Professor of the Practice, which represents the full range of anticipated compensation for this position. Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
