Join the Cowell Center at an exciting time! We have recently reorganized and expanded our team. The Director position has been modified and will now report to the Associate Vice Provost for Student Health, Counseling and Well-Being. The position will supervise four Assistant Directors and will oversee a collaborative leadership model to best support the staff and better serve our students. In the past two years, we have significantly expanded our team and offerings, including a new Therapist in Residence program and expanded group therapy. Position Purpose
The Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is a senior leader within the Cowell Center and is responsible for providing overall direction, management and clinical leadership and supervision to the culturally diverse and multi-disciplinary Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) staff. This position is both accountable and responsible for ensuring that CAPS vision, policies and practices are in alignment with departmental and Santa Clara University's vision and values. The Director of CAPS is administratively focused and will also provide direct clinical services to a small client caseload. CAPS is committed to the values of multiculturalism, social justice, and student learning and is dedicated to providing culturally informed, mental health services for SCU's diverse student population. This position facilitates the psychological well-being of the student body and supports best practices of mental health services to students while supporting the vision of the University to make student learning a central goal by facilitating the psychological well-being of the student body.

A. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Administration (~45%)
- Assume primary clinical leadership and administrative responsibilities of CAPS, including direct and indirect supervision, as noted below.
- Monitor the evolving mental health needs of students and initiate the development of new services and programs to meet them.
- Provide clinical expertise and knowledge to both those supervised and to the AVP.
- Serve on the Cowell Center Management Team.
- Integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion into all levels of CAPS' programmatic and clinical policies and practices.
- Meet regularly with the AVP and convene and coordinate the CAPS Management Team to establish and implement collaborative decision-making processes that facilitate staff input and communication on matters related to Cowell Center functioning.
- Keep abreast of legal liability issues relevant to the provision of psychological services and work to ensure compliance with highest ethical standards and legal mandates in all areas of service delivery.
- Develop, update, and ensure adherence to the Center's policies, procedures, and regulations and individually observing all policies and procedures.
- Coordinate recruitment, hiring, onboarding and retention of new CAPS staff.
- Provide leadership, direction, and support to directly, and indirectly, supervised staff including establishing performance goals and expectations.
- Conduct annual performance evaluation processes for those directly supervised and maintain oversight for all clinical staff performance processes, including the coordination of peer/360 reviews.
- Create and manage staff job expectations, including but not limited, to outreach/liaison responsibilities, phone consults and caseloads.
- Provide leadership to CAPS staff in ways that promote mutual respect, trust, and support of individual strengths; effectively disseminate information to staff.
- Provide and coordinate opportunities for staff's continuing education/professional development; Encourage and support participation of staff in appropriate professional development offerings and work with individual staff to establish and monitor their professional development plans and timelines.
- Provide ongoing training, updates, consultation, and troubleshooting with Electronic Medical Records to clinical and support staff, in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Operations.
- Oversee processes to effectively coordinate services for students within the integrated center; specifically, between SHS and CAPS. Provide opportunities for formal and informal cross discipline consultation in accordance with best practices.
- Implement ongoing evaluation of CAPS services through the CAPS Satisfaction Survey to assess quality of services and identify areas of strength and potential growth.
- Implement ongoing evaluation of CAPS working climate via the CAPS Staff Satisfaction Survey to identify areas of strength and potential growth for staff retention.
- Assist with training and development for the front desk staff, other administrative staff, and mental health training for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), as needed.
- Actively and collaboratively support the mission, goals, and initiatives of the Cowell Center.
Consultation, Referral and Outreach Duties (~45%)
- Provide leadership and effective communication for the Center's work with faculty, staff, administrators, parents and external constituents in response to student needs.
- Provide consultation and guidance for crisis services, including intervention in emergencies and highly acute situations;
- Support the Assistant Director of Operations as they daily manage and triage crisis/urgent cases; assessing, intervening and stabilizing clients in a demanding and fast-faced university setting.
- Provide referrals as needed to other University departments and appropriate community resources.
- Provide clear information on complex issues related to mental health.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships, ensure ongoing communication and active collaboration between the Office of Student Life, Residence Life, and other key campus constituents.
- Participate and lead review, revision, development, and administration of policies and procedures associated with student health and well-being.
- Oversee CAPS clinical response to tragedies that impacts the campus community including coordinating immediate support for impacted students, working with campus partners (e.g. OSL, Res Life), providing recommendations for messaging to the community, and clinical services.
- Support and collaborate with the Outreach Coordinator in providing psycho-educational outreach programming to the campus community.
- Develop and direct outreach programs to the campus community, including the CAPS liaison program.
- Oversee the coordination and share in the regular rotation of on-call after-hours phone consultation to University staff, including the on-duty Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).
- Appropriately document all consultations.
- Serve on the University Behavioral Concerns Team.
- Serve on university-wide committees as appropriate.
Direct Clinical Services (~10%)
- Provide clinical expertise in evaluation, crisis intervention, individual and group therapies, and treatment planning support.
- Provide clinical expertise in providing multiculturally competent care while serving a diverse student population.
- Effectively provide short-term therapy and maintain a limited student client caseload.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills related to the differences in care requirements for adolescents and adults, including, but not limited to: growth and development, psychological and psychosocial needs.
- Provide health education related to promoting client self-care and psychological health.
- Electronically complete written intake assessments and follow-up progress notes of students in a timely manner.

- Collaborate and appropriately consult with Student Health Services to provide care to students who need medication management for mental health.
- Provide advice, consultation, and support in the development, implementation and evaluation of department wide policy.
- Maintain membership in professional organizations as deemed appropriate.
- Perform other work-related assignments as assigned and/or required.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree required in counseling or clinical psychology from an accredited program in psychology; Doctorate degree (Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.) preferred.
- 12 years experience in counseling.
- A minimum of four to six years of progressive experience related to providing and leading mental health services and staff, preferably in a university, college or higher education setting.
- Currently licensed in the State of California or another state with the ability to transfer licensure within 12 months to the State of California.
- Prior experience addressing the needs of a diverse university student population, preferred.
- Knowledge of Title IX, mental health and disability laws preferred.
