Director of Custodial and Grounds

Requirements

The Director of Custodial and Grounds is the leader of both the Custodial Operations Department, the Landscape and Grounds Departments, and the Solid Waste and Recycling area, acting as a key staff advisor and subject matter expert to senior executives on Custodial, Solid Waste and Recycling, and Landscape and Grounds related matters. This role has responsibility for leading 12+ professional and more than 170 unionized staff for the Georgetown University Main Campus. With general guidance from the Associate Vice President, the Director will:
  • Act as an advocate and visionary for quality stewardship of all aspects of the campus facilities.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Sustainability, serving as a leader and steward to promote reductions in university waste streams to further the implementation of the campus sustainability goals
  • Champion programs and work plans and other studies to evaluate efficiencies and opportunities, demonstrating sound financial planning and management of the Departments.
  • Effectively oversee and ensure the human resources and organizational management plans, which emphasize a safe working environment and sound management practices.
  • Work collaboratively with all campus and external stakeholders, establishing and maintaining effective customer relationships.
  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives that support efficiencies for workflow, 24/7 management strategies, and staffing needs.
  • Remain on-call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, for emergencies and other special needs that occur outside normal working hours.
  • Advise the Associate Vice President of Operations on funding needs to adequately maintain the physical facilities of the institution, and assist in the allocation of fiscal resources for various improvement projects and programs on campus.
  • Work with the Associate Vice President and University administrators, faculty, and staff to analyze and assess facilities needs pertaining to programmatic changes.
  • Develop and implement written programs, strategies, and plans to meet the needs of departments and staff with monthly reports on various performance metrics.
  • Handle oversight and programs related to project work, and the visual attractiveness of campus infrastructure, buildings and grounds, including oversight for projects on campus and collaboration with external project managers, inspectors and Facilities Project Management.


Work Interactions
The Director reports to the Associate Vice President for Facilities Operations. 170+ full-time employees report to the Director, 12+ of whom are in supervisory roles. With close collaboration with the Director of Maintenance, Director of Facilities Services, and the Director for Logistics, management control covers the use of necessary computer work order systems.

Basic Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree is required, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • APPA Certification, Certified Facility Manager (CFM) or equivalent with a valid driver's license
    A minimum of 10 years of demonstrable Custodial and Landscape experience with increasing responsibility in the areas of staff supervision
  • Overall understanding and significant experience in the financials of the areas of responsibility with working knowledge of APPA standardization, frequencies and levels
  • Business acumen (which includes familiarity with budgets, financial reporting, and forecasting), and developed maturity in decision process and interaction with people in a team environment
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and regulations related to facilities, residential facilities in a University setting and building system operations
  • Advance positive organizational efforts which promote a respectful, collaborative, solutions-based, and proactive culture
  • Ability to implement recruitment strategies, job training, performance evaluation, career development, and employee engagement activities to support a highly professional, qualified and motivated workforce
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to the university community by demonstrating collaboration and ensuring effective communication processes are developed and maintained, including feedback mechanisms
  • Ability to entail timely delivery and coordination of all work performed and to cover shifts working 7 days/week
  • Experience managing a large, complex organization and at an academic institution is preferred

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$80,429.00 - $157,238.93

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
